Tony Brown

Obituary of Tony Brown

Anthony (Tony) Brown passed away on January 18, 2025, at the age of 87, with his loving wife, Karen, and daughter, Hilary, by his side.

Born in Birmingham, England to Sidney and Mabel Brown, Tony was an avid outdoor enthusiast. He spent his youth climbing the mountains surrounding his beloved childhood home of Ruthin, Wales, with his siblings, Sheila, Cecilie, and Nigel.

Tony immigrated to Canada in 1969 to work as an electrical engineer for Bell Northern Research (later known as Nortel) and earned 19 patents throughout his brilliant career.

Tony met Karen at Camp Medeba, and they spent several years canoeing together with friends in Algonquin Park before Tony finally asked Karen to marry him. If you spent any amount of time with Tony, he would have regaled you with stories of the time he and Karen accidentally pitched their tent on the pathway of a bull moose headed for a drink at the lake. Opening the door of the tent in the morning to come face-to-face with the moose, various iterations of the story had Tony wielding a knife to either defend his new bride – or cut his way out the back of the tent for a speedy escape.

Tony’s pride and joy was his beautiful A-frame cabin in Quebec. Some of Hilary’s best memories with her dad are of skiing across the frozen lake to the cabin in the winter, with their supplies behind them on sleds. If you were lucky, Tony’s beloved dog, Timothy, might help you pull things along. The cabin was a source of never-ending projects for Tony, and he was known to be climbing up its steep roof even in his late 70s when the shingles needed repairing.

Tony served his Kanata Baptist Church family as an elder for over 20 years and put his engineering skills to good use by helping to set up the church’s sound system. After retiring, Tony devoted his time to reading and writing about theology. Even as his health began to decline, a good talk about theology with his friends or his son-in-law, Daniel, would always invigorate him.

A loving grandpa to Maddoc and Davey, Tony passed along his love of outdoor photography by gifting them Grandpa’s Big Book of Canadian Wildlife, now a bedtime favourite.

Tony is with his Heavenly Father, and is reunited with his daughter, Jeanette. He will be deeply missed by his family, but we find peace knowing he is enjoying God’s new creation.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Thorncliffe Place and the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their excellent care.

A celebration of life will be held at Kanata Baptist Church (465 Hazeldean Road, Kanata, Ontario) at 10:30am on Saturday, January 25, 2025
