Arnold Earl Burwell

Obituary of Arnold Earl Burwell

Arnold Earl Burwell, 90, passed away peacefully on September 30 in Ottawa ON. He was the beloved husband and lifelong partner of Vera Bernice (Lidstone) Burwell for 66 years.

Arnold was born and raised on the family farm in the Ottawa Valley with his two brothers, Murray and Willis Burwell, and graduated from Queen’s University’s Faculty of Applied Science in 1956. He went on to become a professional engineer (PEng) and worked in Dalhousie NB until he and Vera moved to Cardinal ON, where he worked for CASCO from 1964-1987 in increasingly senior management roles. They raised their four children in Cardinal before he and Vera moved to Georgetown ON, then Cochrane AB and finally Ottawa ON. They travelled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Thailand. Wherever he lived, Arnold was active in the local United Church congregation, typically in treasurer and fundraiser roles. He loved his retirement jobs at scenic golf courses, his excursions to the US Open and the Masters golf tournaments, and was an avid watcher of sports television.

Arnold, or ‘Arn’ to his kids and their spouses will be sorely missed by  them all: Janis (Jan) (Leonard Stone) of Calgary AB; Scott (Roxane Banville) of Raleigh North Carolina; Wayne (Sandra Stark) of Ottawa ON; and Bruce (Victoria) of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Arden ON.  He also leaves his greatest legacy in nine wickedly-smart and affectionate grandchildren, to whom he was always ‘G-Pa’:  Nathan & Trevor Stone; Dr. Sasha, Justin & Renee Burwell; Sophie & Spencer Burwell;  and Simon & Olivia Burwell.

A Celebration of Life service and reception for Arnold will be held at Cole Funeral Services at Pinecrest Remembrance Services, 2500 Baseline Road Ottawa on Friday October 18 at 11 am.

His family requests that in memory of Arnold, donations be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation (https://foundation.ottawaheart.ca/give/)  , or the United Church of Canada Foundation (https://unitedchurchfoundation.ca/giving/)
