Obituary of Nadia Mayer
Nadia Mayer passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on September 9, 1928, in Rohatyn, Poland (now part of Ukraine), Nadia was the daughter of Cyril and Anastasia Diakow. She was predeceased by her brother, Walter, and her husband, Raymond Mayer. She is survived by her nephews, Timothy Deakon (Nancy) and Anthony Deakon (Irene), along with their children: Alex, Katherine, Adam, and Justine.
Nadia's family immigrated to Canada in June 1929, and she grew up in Toronto, where she attended Orde Street Public School and Harbord Collegiate Institute. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1952 with a B.A. in Psychology and later obtained her teacher's certificate from the Ontario College of Teachers.
Nadia taught at secondary schools in Timmins, Niagara Falls, and Oakville before moving to Ottawa in 1967. There, she began her career at the Federal Government’s Translation Bureau. In 1972, she married Raymond, and they enjoyed a loving life together until his passing in 2012.After retiring in 1991, Nadia pursued her passions, taking piano lessons and singing in a French choir with Raymond.
Following her wishes, Nadia was cremated and was laid to rest beside her husband in a private ceremony at Pinecrest Cemetery.
