Papa, I will miss your phone calls to see how I’m doing. You were always interested in what I had to say. Work, friends, sports, relationships… it didn’t matter what we talked about you treated everything I had to say like it was very important.
I will miss your edited birthday cards that always arrived early. I remember coming to visit and seeing your dining room full of cards filled out for the year. You always made sure we felt your love on our birthdays.
I’m so grateful you prioritized some big sports moments for me and made the trip to support me in person.
I’m extremely grateful for the stories you told of your life and big moments. Always sharing stories of you and nana and how you raised my dad and his siblings. Your excitement and willingness to share your life and family history with us is something we will all carry with us for generations to come.
Our family will miss your wisdom, your generosity, your opinions (mostly haha) and your commitment to your values and beliefs. You were an exceptional father and grandfather and we are so fortunate to have had the relationships we did with you.
You will be missed everyday by all of us.
Please give nana a big hug for me.
Love, your favourite, oldest granddaughter Courtney.

No one could ever say that Papa wasn’t one of the most caring and sociable people you could encounter. He always had the uncanny ability to meet a new friend and have a genuine conversation pretty much anywhere he went.
Over the years Papa always made sure to check in on all his family members and showed his interest and support in our daily lives. The countless phone calls, emails, visits, sporting events he attended and annual birthday cards (especially the ones he edited) will never be forgotten.
You will forever be loved and missed Papa.
Love Chelsey

Dad, thank you for putting your family first and for never taking a day off of caring. You cared for all of us and your grandchildren with unconditional love and support. I appreciate the hard conversations you had with me when i needed to hear something. I know those conversations were probably hard for you but i really love and respect you for doing that.
Please give mom a hug for me and tell her that you both are my heroes. I will continue to pass down the love you both gave to me to Natasha, Hudson and Delaney. Thank you for showing me the right way.
Love,
Burger

I will always remember Papa for being such an incredibly caring and supportive grandfather, as I'm sure myself, my siblings and the rest of our Gill cousins will. Papa always welcomed us with open arms and a lighthearted sense of humour whenever we got to visit him and Nana over the years in Ottawa or whenever he could come visit us in Burlington. He had a way of making everyone feel incredibly special and important. I'll always remember our long chats ranging from topics about Canadian history and politics, and how my school and dance was going. I'll especially remember him calling to check in on me when I went off to university and was living by myself for the first time, and he assured me that no matter how overwhelmed I might've been with school and what comes after, that I'd be more than capable of making it through and whatever path I chose was the right one for me. I know Papa loved and cared for every one of us in the family, and he will be missed dearly. Love, Natasha (aka Nattie, as Papa always called me).

Papa was always the most supportive person. After finishing hockey games he would always tell me good game even if it wasn’t a good game. He would constantly tell me I was his favourite grandson living in Burlington Ontario. And although I was the only one, I still loved hearing that. I will always remember papa for standing at the glass during a hockey game, having his camera in his hand and taking photos with the flash on to blind everyone on the ice. But it was the thought that counts. Another great Papa memory was when he came down to visit us for the week and my sisters Delaney and Natasha decided it would be a great idea for him to learn how to play the video game just dance. Let’s just say although Papa was a very nice, supporting, loving, and hard working guy, dance was at the bottom of the list for his skills. Papa was 1 of 1 and my sisters and I loved every minute of being with him. May you rest in peace, Papa. Love Hudson.

I am saddened by the loss of Bruce Gill, a wonderful man I had the pleasure of knowing and interacting with over many years while growing up with Dave. Bruce was always at the door with a pleasant and cheerful demeanor, ready for a chat, inquiring, and genuinely caring about those around him. I admired him as a model husband and father, especially the way he comforted and interacted with Joan—qualities that I realize now, with age, are truly rare. His commitment to his family was evident in how well he raised Dave, shaping him into the gentleman we all respect. Reflecting on these photos, I see striking similarities between Bruce and Dave that I had not noticed before. Bruce will be greatly missed, and I will always picture him comforting Joan with his loving presence.

Bruce was a kind and gentle soul, whose greatest joy came from the love of his family. We had the pleasure of chatting with him many times, over the years, at the rinks cheering for Hudson. He was such a proud grandfather, beaming with joy when Huddy took to the ice. His warmth and sincerity touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. May you find eternal peace and reunite joyfully with your beloved Joan.

I luckily had the pleasure of standing beside Bruce many times a hockey arenas across Ontario. He would ask questions, talk to the opposing parents, and even give advice to my son after the game. He was so proud of Hudson (as he should be), telling everyone who would listen who his Grandson was and what number he was. One time in particular, he was so proud to take photos throughout the game with the intent to show his friends back in Ottawa, he didnt realize the flash was on (nor did I as I was beside him) the ref had to stop the game to tell him to turn it off. Man was Dave embarassed...but wow was Bruce proud. An upstanding individual and one of the greats to ever stand beside to watch hockey and talk about life too.

Thank you Todd. Bruce did like finding you to chat during games and really enjoyed watching the games with you ! The camera was legendary and always present . He brought it to Natasha and Delaney’s dance studio to take pictures one day . I had to tell him camera’s were not allowed. He gave me the Bruce stare ….. and I lied and said it was a studio rule , not mine . Thanks for sharing Todd.

Pat and I met this wonderful family on a memorable Canadian Battlefields Tour in France in 2014. We became close friends, especially with Bruce and Joan and enjoyed a number of other, smaller adventures with them over the next several years until Joan’s passing, then Pat’s and now, dear Bruce has joined them and they are having a reunion of a different sort. Bruce was a special friend, especially to Pat and they had many long walks and talks together. His love for family was the centre of Bruce’s existence and his love for them is demonstrated in what a fine family the Gills are.
Lovingly and sincerely,
Lynn McKee
Please forgive the amateur photo addition of Pat in the attached picture.

Thank you for sharing a heartfelt obituary and tribute to your incredible dad (and mom, as well). Feeling deep gratitude that he extended his lessons for a life of purpose and for his special gift of friendship throughout the decades. Bruce was a true leader with integrity and shared his mentorship selectively. Always appreciated and never to be forgotten♥️

My Mom - Myrtle Sallaway (nee Wilson) and Bruce were cousins - I got to really know Bruce and Joan a little later in life when they arranged a Family Reunion for me and my husband when we returned to Ottawa from B.C. for my Husband's family reunion in 2013 - Bruce and I maintained a telephone friendship ever since then and I have to say that I have really missed our long telephone and email conversations over the years. I feel very sad but at the same time I know that Bruce and Joan are together again....this is a picture of my Mom holding baby Bruce.....my heart is with the family -
