It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Underwood (East) of Ottawa, Ontario on June 24th, 2024 at the age of 90. Joan will be deeply missed by her son Gary and daughter-in-law Samantha, son Miles, daughters Lee and Tracey, sister Jeanette, brother-in-law Geoff, brother John, sister Peta, as well as many much loved other family members and dear friends. Joan is predeceased by her husband Peter, eldest son Dale, her parents George William East and Muriel Gertrude Tulley, and her sisters Elaine, Bernadette and Patricia.
Mary Joan Shirley Underwood (Joan) was born in Perth, Australia. She grew up in a wonderful family home environment with her siblings and truly cherished her family. She joined the Woman's Royal Australian Army Corps in 1952 and was fortunate enough to meet some amazing people, including Queen Elizabeth. During this time Joan met the love of her life and future husband, Peter Christian Underwood. She was 23 when they married. Their lives together were filled with adventure and travel as Peter was an airline pilot and given Joan's zest for life it truly was a perfect match. They made their way to Canada in 1958 to start their family and subsequently moved to the Caribbean where the kids enjoyed their formative years growing up in the lands of sun and surf. Later, Joan and family returned to Canada where they tapped down roots. Joan received her Canadian Citizenship in 1973.
A very social woman, Joan made life long friends wherever she went. She had a great sense of humour and loved to entertain - hosting wonderful dinner parties for her friends & family.
Joan's faith in God ran deep and from that she managed to always stay strong through life's twists and turns. She always kept a wide-eyed and positive outlook and the most wonderful sense of joy throughout her life. Her spirit, smile, and presence will be greatly missed.
