Carl Stewart

Obituary of Carl Wilson Stewart

Carl passed away in Ottawa following a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Stoneham, his daughter Susannah of Victoria, BC, son Ian (Melissa MacIntyre), beloved grandsons Thomas Randy and William Dana of Ottawa, sister Carole (Saville) of Sidney, BC. Predeceased by his parents Lorne and Marion Stewart, formerly of Kemptville.

Carl grew up in Kemptville, attended North Grenville High School then Carleton University in Ottawa. After a short career in teaching in Hull, Quebec; Zambia and Nigeria he moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to complete a Master’s Degree in Science. Upon returning to Canada, he joined the Department of Agriculture, for his second career as a federal public servant. Carl always enjoyed a number of activities and was fortunate and wise to take an early retirement and have more time to enjoy tennis, golf, bridge, playing guitar, refinishing furniture, reading, volunteering with elementary students, gardening and trying out new dinner recipes. He and Brenda loved to travel and had a special fondness for Italy. Once Brenda retired, they moved to Brockville, and enjoyed a life with all these activities and more, such as  curling and joining a winetasting group.

In recent years, Carl suffered a couple of strokes resulting in impairments to his mobility and his cognitive functioning. A marked decrease in his abilities and interests was difficult for him, his family and friends. Our sincere thanks go out to the dedicated and patient caregivers who have supported us throughout this period, in particular Kim Martindale of Prescott.

As per Carl’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. An informal Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends. Donations to the charity of your choice.
