Obituary of Dr. Benjamin Douglas Plumb, P.Eng.

Dr. Benjamin Douglas Plumb, born January 16th, 1987, journeyed through life with a zest for adventure that touched all who knew him. Growing up amidst the tranquil beauty of Penetanguishene, Ontario, and later settling in Midland, he found solace and inspiration in the rugged landscapes around him, fostering a deep love for mountain biking and waterscapes. His academic path led him to Waterloo University, where he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering before delving into further research, culminating in the defense of his doctoral thesis in 2017.

Within his bustling life, Ben seamlessly wove together his professional pursuits with his personal passions. As an integral member of the GeoProcess Research Associates, his dedication and expertise left an impressive mark on the field. He moved to Ottawa in 2016 for a new chapter, where he built a cherished life in Carleton Place alongside his wife, Morgan McKendry, and their beloved dogs —Rocky, Charlie, and Winnie.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Ben's interests spanned a wide spectrum, ranging from the adrenaline rush of kayaking and F1 racing, as well as the thrill of mountain and fat biking. Whether tinkering with drones, bikes or gadgets in his office, experimenting with 3D printers, or constructing creations with Lego, he was always immersed in his passions.

In his quest for connection with the natural world, Ben reveled in moments spent by the riverside, observing the ebb and flow of the water, embarking on exhilarating adventures, hiking through rugged terrain, or through family dog walks through the neighborhood. He was always finding solace in the beauty and mystery of the outdoors. Yet, amidst his diverse pursuits, it was his profound connection to rivers that truly captured his heart—a passion that seamlessly intertwined with his work.

In the tapestry of his life, Ben was a loving spouse to Morgan McKendry, dedicated dog Dad, a devoted son to Rebecca Larmand, stepson to Maggie Plumb, and stepbrother to Stephanie Brady (Jason). His absence leaves a void felt deeply by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, friends, colleagues, neighbors. He is preceded in death by his beloved father and friend, Douglas Plumb.

A celebration of Ben's life will take place this summer, providing an opportunity for loved ones to gather and honor his memory. Through his infectious enthusiasm and irrepressible spirit, Ben left an imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him—a legacy of joy, passionate and boundless curiosity that will endure for years to come.
