It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Yianni (John) Zigiris at the age of 80. He passed peacefully in the presence of his family on February 23rd, 2024.
Predeceased by his parents, Konstantinos and Georgia, and his brother George. Beloved husband to Penelope (née Karalekas). Loving father to Georgina (George) and Tina (Taki).The world’s best Papou to Sam, Yianna, and Anastasia. He will be remembered fondly by his brothers, Tasso (Helen), Niko (Kim) and his sister Panagiota (Chrisostomos); as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Yianni was born in Paradeisia, Arkadia, Greece and later immigrated to Ottawa in 1966. He will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humour, his immense love for his family, his kindness towards others, and his devotion to his community. Papou Yianni did everything for his family and loved ones, always with a smile on his face.
Yianni’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses in the Neurosciences Acute Care Unit at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their kindness, support and care.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 26,from 11:00 am to12:00 pm at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church (1315 Prince of Wales Drive), with funeral to follow at 12:00 pm. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery (2500 Baseline Road). Immediately following the interment, friends and family will gather for a makaria reception at the Hellenic Event Centre, beside the Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Hellenic Community of Ottawa would be greatly appreciated.
