Obituary of Jeannine (Nin) Dorios Thomas

Nin, the woman who kept us on our toes right to the very end.

She loved bingo, a good beef stew, vanilla ice cream, and definitely NOT tea. Coffee only for her. If she wasn't sitting outside socializing with others in her building, cooking, or feeding the chipmunks on her balcony there's some well-fed little critters out there), she was rearranging her living room furniture for the 3rd month in a row. She also had a knack for picking the least affectionate kitten in the litter to take home.

She loved as hard as she laughed; you always knew your jokes hit home; you could hear her laughing for miles. When she was younger you would find her surrounded by family at the trailer on the weekends in the summer months, or in an arena the rest of the year watching her son Joe play sledge hockey and her son Mike play hockey. Her definition of family was forever extended to everyone around her. Her acceptance of others and warm-hearted nature knew no bounds; much like her strength which she graciously carried until her final rest. If she wasn't watching hockey or camping, she would be running a diner, not just in Ottawa, but Calgary at one point as well. Later in life, you would find her making candy or fudge, her expertise in rolling candy canes is something we still talk about, even today.

She would never turn down an opportunity to play games or take selfies with her granddaughter, even though she had no idea what she was doing. She would indulge her grandchildren in any way she could just to see them happy. Even if that meant accidentally deconstructing her grandson’s Lego masterpiece as he was still creating it. Tiny pieces were never her favorite thing.

Over the years she helped gut, drywall, and flip many homes across Ottawa. She was never afraid to learn a new skill to help get the job done. Whether that was digging fence posts or the hole for a backyard pool she went at it with all her enthusiasm. She put her all into giving her family everything she could.

Nin left behind a husband, Roland (Roly) whom she had been with for 67 years, a son, Michael (Mike), 2 grandchildren, Brandon, and Lily, an extremely grateful and fortunate daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Katie), and several siblings. She's predeceased by her dearly missed son, Robert (Joe) whom she has now peacefully rejoined.

Nin, your ever-growing love, and vigor will be missed daily by everyone who Knew you. We will never forget how it felt to be wrapped in your firm hugs or hear you lose all control while laughing. We love you.

May angels lead you in
