Obituary of Leontine Pierrette (Leon) Grella (nee Caelen)

Born in Genk Belgium (Nov 7, 1931), and died surrounded by family on August 21st, 2023 in Ottawa, ON at the age of 91.

Leon grew up in Belgium, where she met and later married the love of her life, Frank Grella, while working in her parent's cafe.

Seeking a fresh start, and a new life for her young family, Leon and Frank left Europe, landing in Halifax, before settling in Ottawa in 1952.  Ottawa became home, and saw the birth of her four children.

Professionally, Leon began life in Ottawa as a seamstress, then a clerk at a local Miracle Mart, and through her hardwork and persevereance, attained the position of store manager.  

Avid golfer, and long time member of the Glen Mar Golf and Country Club, the "ping" from her drives will long be remembered by any who enjoyed the privilege of golfing with her.

Before all else, Leon placed family first.  Wife to Frank, Mother to William (Bill), Sandra (Sandy) (Phil Ito), Barbara (Barb) (Derrick Duncan), and Karen (KK).  Grandmother to James, Rob, Curtis, Christina, Vincent, Allison, and Jason, and Nicholas.  Great Grandmother to Bailey (Jace), Emma, Caitlyn, Dylan, Peyton, Hudson, and Sloane, Leon was the prototypical familial Matriarch, and universally loved.

A private service is being held on September 23rd, in Ottawa, Ontario to celebrate the life of this beautiful and extraordinary woman.
