Obituary of David Smith
The Smith family sadly announces the passing of David Leonard Smith on Saturday December 17, 2022 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was in his 85th year. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Shirley (nee Heffernan), children Terry (Eugenia) and Dale (Laura) and grandchildren Emilie and Bianca. David was predeceased by his siblings Art, Pat, Margaret, John, Stan and Richard (Dick). David first worked as a radio operator in the remote outpost of Port Harrison (Inukjuak) in northern Quebec and then transitioned to a maintenance supervisor for Transport Canada where he helped maintain airport ground communication operations across the country for 35 years before his retirement from Transport Canada. He spent much of his life in the community of Nepean, volunteering as softball coach, hockey coach and administrator. Following his heart attack in 1985 he helped form the very first cardiac rehabilitation program in Nepean. He leaves many friends and colleagues with whom he spent countless hours curling, playing golf or just enjoying a good cup of coffee. David loved spending time at the family cottage on Black Lake where many happy memories were made. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Highland Park Cemetery, 2037 McGee Side Road, Carp. If desired, donations to the Ottawa Mission or Salvation Army would be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
