Elizabeth Fry (nee Cushing)

Obituary of Elizabeth Fay Fry (nee Cushing)

At her home in Ottawa on Sunday, September 18, 2022. Elizabeth Fay Fry, known to everyone as Betty, aged 85 years, passed away peacefully after battling cancer, with family by her side.

Survived by her loving husband, Donald Fry, her children; Sandra Collins and Glo Kelly (spouse), Janis Fry and Jerry Laplante (spouse) and Tracy and Lex McPhail (spouse), her grandchildren; Tyler and Lindsay Fry (spouse), and Alexis Fry; and, her great grandchildren; Ace Trolly and Wesley and Emma Fry.

Born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Oretha (Olsen) Cushing and siblings Shirley, Wayne, Bob, Pat and Mac and predeceased by her brothers Mike and Arnold and a stillborn sister. After graduating high school and completing her Teacher Education Program, Betty began her teaching career in Granby, QC and eventually moved to Ottawa to teach at D. Roy Kennedy Public School until she met and married her husband and raised her children. Betty was an incredible mom, sister, nanny, great nanny and aunt. When she wasn’t focussed on family matters, she spent a lot of her time in service to her community with thousands of hours of service at Extendicare Medex. Betty and Don were also part of a number of church communities, beginning with Cityview United, then Bethany Baptist and most recently Bethel Pentacostal Church. She and Don were an integral part of church life including outreach to others both near and far to share their experiences of new birth and new life in Jesus. She was also an avid skier, played countless rounds of bridge in various groups, loved handcrafts and painting, hated gardening, was a great cook, and welcomed anyone, especially those in need, into her home. Most recently, she enjoyed family time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren enriching their lives with her love, support, guidance and willingness to be silly.  She was always looking for a way to bring some fun to every event.  She will be dearly missed, but her faith sustained her to the end and she has now been promoted to glory.

Everyone is encouraged to find a personal way to celebrate Betty’s life. Please share your remembrances and well wishes for the family on our Tribute Wall. A private burial will follow at a later date.
