Obituary of Claude Sheldrick
After a long and productive life Claude passed away peacefully on June 29,2022 at the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre at the age of 100. Sweetheart and best friend of Jean (nee Morley) deceased 2011. They met and fell in love in London, England during WW2 and were married for 69 happy years.
Loving father to Paula (John) and Neil (Donna). Much loved brother of Boyd Sheldrick (Bernice) and Beryl Yates (Bert) – all deceased. Caring Grandpa to Jill, Adam, Jacob, Lisa, Crystal and Luke and GGPa to 9 great grandchildren. Cherished brother in-law of Sheila and Derroll Murphy and dear “Uncle Claude” to David, Randall, Diane and Catherine.
Claude was a kind, generous, humble and hard-working soul. A friend to all he met. Life long resident of Ottawa growing up in Little Italy. Proud public servant working at the National Research Centre for more than 30 years after returning from WW2 - where he enlisted at 17 and served in Europe with the Army Dental Corps. Handyman extraordinaire – building the family home in Carleton Heights, his beloved cottage on Mississippi Lake and helping many friends with renovation and woodworking projects over the years, including during their 25 happy years living at Amberwood Village. Claude and Jean loved to cook and entertain and while spending winters in Florida after retirement, they added to their many close friendships throughout Canada and the US.
The family wishes to express our sincere thanks to the Nursing, PSW, Recreation, OT, Physio, Medical and Dental staff and volunteers who have worked hard over the past 6 ½ years to keep Claude safe and happy and to make this last chapter of his life’s journey a positive one, despite all of the challenging circumstances. We would also like to recognize the care and kindness shown by his private caregivers, Wendy and Paulette, whose support and friendship has meant so much to Claude and to the family.
Cremation has taken place. Private family gathering. Memorial donations may be made in Claude’s name to the Ottawa Food Bank, the Ottawa Mission or the Ottawa Humane Society.
