Douglas Carter

Obituary of Douglas E.H. Carter

Peacefully, though much too soon, at his home and surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. Loving husband of 56 years to Patricia A. (Logan), his high school sweetheart. Proud father of sons Jonathan and Michael. Beloved Grampy to grandchildren Logan, Hanna and Jacqueline. Born in Saint John, NB to parents Douglas Sr. and Ann of West St. James St. Survived by siblings Fred Carter, Betty-Ann Taylor (Gerry) and Debbie Carter. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as a close network of longtime friends. Predeceased by brother Bill Carter (Judy), sisters-in-law Cheryl Carter (Fred) and Elaine Foster (Wayne), nephew Todd Carter and niece Julie Merko.

Doug was a Queen's Scout, a teacher, a union leader and a teacher advocate. His 39 year career took him and Pat to three different provinces (including four years in Northern Canada) and eventually led him to Emily Carr Middle School, where he taught for 19 years before becoming President of the Teachers' Federation of Carleton and later the founding President of the Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teachers' Federation. Doug was also an elected member of the first two Councils of the Ontario College of Teachers, and he later remained actively involved with the Retired Teachers of Ontario. Doug was known as a mentor, a natural diplomat and a skilled negotiator. His patience, steady hand and wise counsel will be missed by family, friends and colleagues alike. Special thanks to Bayshore Home Care Solutions and Community Palliative Medicine Associates for their compassion and excellent care.
