Vassilia Antoniou

Obituary of Vassilia Antoniou

February 7, 1934 – March 29, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vassilia Antoniou (neé Psarras) on Tuesday, March 29th, 2022 peacefully in her 88th year.

Vassilia is survived by her sons George and Andreas (Ann Marie), her beloved grandson Aiden, and her brothers John (Elpiniki) and Jim (late Athena). She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Costas, her parents Andreas and Eleni, and her brother Emmanuel.

Vassilia will forever be remembered by her many nieces and nephews, and by friends and relatives in Greece, Australia, the United States and Canada. She will be especially missed by her dog Spiro who was a wonderful companion.

Born on February 7th, 1934, in Karlovasi, Samos, Greece, Vassilia immediately was welcomed into the close and tight knit Greek community in Ottawa when she immigrated to Canada in the late 60’s. Vassilia (Bessie to those that knew her well) spent her life working as a seamstress and dressmaker in many stores throughout the city, but her great passion was her Greek community and church. She spent decades as a member of the church choir, and up until a few years ago volunteered her time each year working in the food tent of the Greek Festival.

The Antoniou family would like to thank the staff at Foxview for providing Vassilia with such amazing care, compassion and respect during her time with them. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes out to Protopresbyter Father Alex Michalopoulos for visiting Vassilia and giving her sons support and strength in their time of need.

Family will receive friends on Monday, April 4th at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church (1315 Prince of Wales Drive) from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, with Trisagion Prayer at 6:00 pm and again on Tuesday, April 5th from 11:00 am to noon. The Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, April 5th at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. To view the livestream of the Funeral Service please click here.
