Celebration of Life
Obituary of Christian (Chris) Herrmann
Christian (Chris) Herrmann
March 12, 1940 – March 4, 2022
Chris left this earth peacefully with his family by his side at the Queensway Carleton Hospital following a battle with cancer. Loving husband of Erika, father of Susan (Stuart Hoftyzer) and Katherina (Luc Platt). Proud grandfather of Ian Hoftyzer. Son of the late Johann & Martha Herrmann of Switzerland. Dear brother of Rosmarie Muller and Samuel (Johanna) Herrmann of Switzerland and Margrit (Kurt) Wunderli of New Hampshire, USA. Fondly remembered by Andre Doupagne. Predeceased by Martha Doupagne. Chris will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and family friends.
Chris and Erika moved to Canada from Switzerland in 1967 for a few years to learn English, but their new home grew on them, and they decided to stay. Chris used to joke that he was a slow learner. He enjoyed a 32-year career at the National Research Council: Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre before retiring in 2000.
He always enjoyed skiing, read anything he could get his hands on (especially Sci-Fi), as well as crossword puzzles and puttering around the house and garden.
Chris was generous and supported many different charities. As a final act of generosity, he donated his body to the University of Ottawa, Department of Anatomy, for research and science.
The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their care and compassion during Chris's final days: For those who wish, memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Ottawa Heart Institute and would be appreciated by the family.
