Obituary of Michael Clarence Ip

Michael Clarence Ip passed away April 14, 2021 at the age of 29 following a 10-month encounter with leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home in Ottawa.

Michael was born May 29, 1991 in Ottawa to Joseph and Amy Ip. He attended Queen’s University and received a BSc in Applied Math (Sci ‘13) despite being repeatedly kicked out of Clark Hall and “borrowing” a wheelchair from the local hospital. He was pursuing a Master’s in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa, where he was researching applications of machine learning for the improvement of access to and quality of end of life care.

Michael was known for his compassion, perseverance, and sense of humour. He was a loving son and brother and a dedicated friend. He enjoyed spending time with friends, whether traveling to faraway locations or holed up inside playing board games or DND. Michael liked to share happiness with those around him, and this could often come in the form of a rum cake or tiramisu.

Michael is survived by his parents, Joseph and Amy, his brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Gosia, his nephew, Nathan, and Monty (aka butthole-dog).

At this time, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will follow when friends and family are able to gather again.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to charity in memory of Michael. A few suggested options are the Ottawa Hospital Foundation,  Bruyere Foundation  or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
