My heart still aches over this news. Caldwell School was when we first met. He had a heart bigger than most, and genuinely made the world a better place. You will be missed Dave.

David was my best friend for many years. He joined me on so many adventures. He was my first boyfriend, my first kiss, we got our ears pierced together, he was so many things to me. But we were young and our relationship ended and we drifted apart. But even when we had been apart for years, when he heard that I was in trouble, he was the first one to call me. I was too young and stupid to realise how good I had it right here, I traveled the world and never found anyone like him. Kevin reunited us recently and I will always be grateful to him. David was an angel here on earth and I am so grateful that I was one of the lucky ones to have known him. As a parent, I can't imagine loosing a son, and I have held mine so tight these last few days. Good speed. Xoxox

Words cannot describe this unbearable loss. David Alexander John Hagerman was a larger than life character. He had strong opinions and was never afraid to express them, no matter how absurd they may have been. But that's what made him Dave.
I'll never forget the time he texted me so excited about his 'new invention'. He didn't want to tell me by text because he was afraid Google would steal his idea. I barely had time to respond and he was already calling. He proceeded to go into elaborate detail about his genius idea 'The Spatuladle: Half Spatula, Half Ladle'. All the functionality, without the mess, as he described it.
My friendship with Dave started like any other friendship. It was grade 5, I pretended to steal his wallet, and he kicked me in the nuts. I'll never forget Mme. Philibert dragging us both out of the class into the hall to 'talk out our problems'. It was then we realized how much we had in common. That same year, Dave and I went on a trip to Toronto for the weekend with Dave's parents. I don't even remember the reason for the trip, but if you know Dilys and Murray, it was probably just to treat their son and his new friend to a fun weekend away.
Over the years, I've been privileged enough to travel all over the world, but that trip to Toronto will always be one of my most memorable. It was my first time swimming in a rooftop pool, my first time seeing the Stanley Cup, my first time seeing a live jazz band, whose CD I still have to this day. Those 10 minutes in the hall were the start of more than 20 years of amazing memories.
In 2006, I moved to the East coast for University and Dave and I lost touch for a bit, but when I moved back a few years later, we picked up where we left off, as if no time had passed. Shortly after, I bought a condo in Kanata and asked Dave to move in with me. From pissing off the neighbours with our oil changes in the parking lot (which always had a 4 of our vehicles squeezed into 2 spots), to just hanging out on the couch playing Gran Turismo and watching Top Gear, we were inseparable, probably to a fault haha.
It was there that I met my wife, Nicole. As her and my friendship grew, so did hers with Dave, and she started to come around more often. When I eventually told Dave how I felt about her, he was determined to help. I was working nights at the time, and Dave would text me 'Nicole's over'. Coincidentally, I'd show up at home for my extended lunch break to hang out, with a little wink from Dave as I'd enter.
When Nicole and I started dating, I don't think she realized that Dave and I were a package deal and I'm sure at times it felt like she was dating both of us. After all, SHE was the third-wheel.
Nicole and I bought a house together in 2014 and I'm sure she thought it would finally just be the two of us. But that only lasted a couple of days until the ping pong table and dart board showed up. I'd obviously need help setting them up and to test them out so Dave and I spent the next 2 years testing them and honing our skills.
Over the years, Dave has excelled at many things. He was a competitive soccer player, a talented musician, and a cook, and recently he had developed a love for construction and trucking that he knew was his calling. Two weeks ago we went over his business plans to start a part-time construction business of his own.
Regardless of what he did, he did it with conviction. He was a hard worker, a loving son and brother, and a dedicated friend. His big heart and infectious laugh would fill every room he walked into and it's absence will leave an unfillable void for many.
If there's one thing I know about Dave, it's that he wouldn't want us to be sad, so I'll end this with a joke he recently wrote:
"Dogs are better than cats, if you value loyalty. For instance, you've never seen a homeless guy with a cat." - Dave Hagerman, 2020
Love always, your friend Adam.
