Obituary of John Leggett
At the age of 99 years Dad passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday Sept. 28, 2020. He is predeceased by our Mom, Ruth Leggett, the love of his life and best friend. Dad is survived by his children Joan (John), Jim (Susan), Bob (Doris) and Tom; his 7 grandchildren, 11.5 great grandchildren and his 6 nieces and nephews. Dad entered WWII at the age of 21 and distinguished himself as a fighter pilot for the RCAF in the 412 Squadron and later for the RAF in the 1435 Squadron stationed in Malta. Towards the end of his tour Dad also was part of the RAF Balkan Air Force covering the then Yugoslavia, Albania and Northern Greece. Dad loved flying and being a pilot. After the war he went to Guelph University to obtain his degrees in agriculture and teaching. His first teaching position was in the small town of Tilbury Ontario where his agricultural background came in handy as in addition to his teaching duties, he was also in charge of the school chickens. After a few years in Tilbury, Mom & Dad moved back to their home town of Ottawa with Dad taking positions at Ottawa Tech, Laurention High School and then finishing off the last 25 years of his career at Lisgar Collegiate as Head of the Physical Education Department, coincidentally Dad had been a student himself at Lisgar. The Family would like to thank Dr. Robert, Dr. MacDonald and all the staff from Ottawa 2 East at the Perley Rideau Veteran`s Health Centre for the care and compassion they showed Dad, it is truly appreciated. Dad will not only be deeply missed by our family but also by the many students he taught over the years, and his many associates and friends. He was a kind and generous soul. Good-bye Dad, you are now with Mom, we love you both!! Due to Covid restrictions a memorial service will be decided at a later date.
