Paul MacDonald

Obituary of Paul MacDonald

Born June 6,1952 in Sydney, N.S., he was husband to Gloria Ines Patino Leon, son to Barry and Ellie MacDonald, and brother to Andrew, John (partner Mary), Annie (Steven), and Keith. He had many nieces and nephews in Ottawa, Colombia, and the United States.

At various times in his life Paul lived in Edmonton, Cali, and Kuwait City, (as well as an extended and interesting sojourn in Morocco) but he always returned to Ottawa where he was born and grew up. He came late to the teaching profession but was an enthusiastic and popular math teacher at Hillcrest High School. In 2018, after two decades of teaching, he retired.

His generosity of spirit, and his deep affection for family and friends were well known. He had a sharp mind and a keen interest in ideas. He loved a debate and an afternoon or evening with Paul usually involved a lively and passionate exchange of ideas and arguments that forced all the lucky participants to think clearly and deeply. Many family gatherings were spent arguing over the definition of this word or that and books were discussed with vigour.

He met his beloved Gloria when he was teaching at the international school in Cali, Colombia. He  learned Spanish and she learned English. They married in 2000 and shared a bond over the years that was the envy of many of their friends. Gloria’s devotion in the last months of his life eased Paul’s suffering and helped him to meet the challenge of his cancer with  typical passion and good humour.

Paul lives on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him and in the love of his beautiful wife.
