Obituary of Harold (Harry) Splett
Harry Splett, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on the eve of his 96th birthday, on April 4, 2025.
Born on April 4, 1929, in Beausejour, Manitoba, Harry was the second son of Edward Splett and Alvina Sonnenberg Splett-Recksiedler. He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Alma Splett (McIvor) in 2012 and will be buried beside her at Pinecrest Cemetery.
He is survived by his children, Evan (Pearl Rotter), Elaine (Dave Mather), and Fay (John Novelli) and his grandchildren, Esther Splett, Ben Pearo, and Danielle Pearo.
Harry lived a life characterized by strength, independence, and health consciousness. His desire to live free from medical intervention was honored, and his final wishes were respected.
He served his country as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, working as a radio technician at the end of World War II and into the1950s. During this time, he met his wife, Alma, whom he married in 1952. They settled in Bell’s Corners, where he, along with Alma, built their family home and raised their family. Harry worked in various professions, including as a geodetic surveyor working in Africa, Brazil, and the Middle East, and later as an electronics technologist with the Federal Government until his retirement. Always having a strong political view, he ran for office in two federal elections for the Social Credit Party in 1962 & 1963 and more recently as an independent in 2015 at the ripe old age of 86!
His friends on shortwave radio knew him by his call sign VE3 HHS, and he valued these friendships as part of his daily social network. Many of his dear friends and family have preceded him in death, but he will be remembered and missed by those who remain, including his longtime neighbours and family.
In lieu of flowers or donations, those wishing to honor his memory are invited to do so by performing an act of kindness for someone in need of compassionate support.
Harry will be dearly missed for his sharp wit, intelligence, and the love with which he is remembered.
