Obituary of Indravadan Patel
It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we announce the passing of Indravadan Patel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, on 16 July 2026, at the age of 84.
Indravadan was born on 17 April 1942 in Masaka, Uganda. He was the second youngest of five children and the only brother to four devoted sisters. His childhood was happy and full of promise but life asked much of him from an early age. When his father passed away Indravadan was just fourteen years old.
He continued his education in India and later in London before returning to Uganda, where he joined the family business.
In 1964, he married his beloved wife, Kusumben. It was the beginning of a partnership that would span more than sixty years. Through times of prosperity and loss, new countries and new beginnings they faced every chapter of life hand in hand.
In 1972, when Idi Amin's expulsion of Uganda's Asian community forced the family to leave, they lost their house, their business, and the life they had known. What could never be taken from them was their love for one another.
Their journey took them from Uganda to India, then to London, and finally to Canada, where they built a new life in Fredericton before settling in Ottawa. Through every challenge, they supported one another with unwavering love, strength, and faith for which our family will always be grateful.
Indravadan rebuilt his life more than once, becoming a hardworking and successful businessman. Yet success never changed him. He remained humble, generous, and quietly compassionate, never making others feel small and always willing to Iend a helping hand.
Having experienced both success and hardship, he understood what it meant to begin again and quietly helped many others do the same.
He was a man of few words and great presence-calm, kind, gentle, and wise. He found joy in life's simple pleasures and was happiest when those around him were comfortable, cared for, and well fed. Through the way he lived, he taught us that while circumstances may change, character endures.
Dad often said, "I am not a quitter." And he never was.
Whatever life placed before him, he met it with courage, dignity, humour, and kindness. He knew both success and loss, yet neither changed the way he treated people.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kusumben, his devoted daughers, Janisha, Tejal, and Heena, his sons-in-law, Mike and Sanjay, who became like sons to him; and his cherished grandchildren Maya, Alec, Jaiden and Anya.
He is also survived by his loving sisters, Prafula and Manjula and his brother in laws and best friends - Indrakumar & Manulal. He was predeceased by his dear sisters Pushpaben and Kusumben. He held a very special place in the hearts of many members of Kusumben’s family, who cherished him for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.
He leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and India, all of whom will remember him with great affection.
