Obituary of Carolyn Hope Fredeen

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Hope Fredeen (née McHardy) into the arms of Jesus, peacefully surrounded by her daughters after a brave and resilient journey with cancer. Carolyn was born September 6, 1949, in London, Ontario, and was called home to heaven far too soon. While this is a day of great sadness, it is also one of joy and comfort, knowing Carolyn is more alive than she’s ever been and reunited with her loved ones in heaven.

Carolyn was predeceased by her beloved parents, James Clifford and Bernice McHardy, and her brother Phil McHardy. She is lovingly remembered by her brother Dave McHardy, her sister Bonnie Gill, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

At the tender, young age of 10, Carolyn began following her father to work at McHardy Vacuum, where she developed the strong work ethic that would guide her throughout her life. She then became an RNA and worked at London Psychiatric Hospital and later at Winchester Hospital after moving to Ottawa in 1979.

Carolyn had a natural gift for making a house feel like a home. She loved sewing, crocheting, quilting, and decorating, and was always helping others create spaces that felt warm, cozy, and welcoming. Her home was always open.

Her compassion for others was at the core of who she was. Carolyn deeply cared for the elderly and was passionate about helping children in developing countries, quietly giving her time, support, and love wherever it was needed most. She was drawn to those who needed kindness and dignity, and she gave both freely. Her work with seniors was not just a career, but a calling, and she eventually started her own business caring for the elderly with patience, respect, and genuine love.

Above all, Carolyn was a devoted and loving mother to her two daughters, Kristin and Karla. As a single mother for many years, she made countless sacrifices to ensure her girls felt safe, supported, and loved. While she worked part-time, her true focus was always her daughters. She volunteered at their school, showed up for everything that mattered, and always put them first. One of her greatest goals was to be present to raise her girls, and she made that dream a reality.

In recent years, she created cherished memories with her daughters on a trip of a lifetime to England and Ireland, filled with laughter, connection, and joy while she was still in good health. It was a reflection of who she was: thoughtful, generous, and always wanting to create meaningful moments with the people she loved most.

Carolyn was also a proud and adoring grandmother to Xavier and Stella. Though they lived far away, they were the joy of her life and she visited them as often as she could. She stayed closely connected through FaceTime and loved watching Xavier’s basketball games online, never missing a chance to be part of their lives from afar. She always found time to lovingly mend their well-loved teddy bears whenever they needed ‘surgery,’ creating one of the many little traditions they’ll always remember.

Carolyn will be remembered for her strong faith, her quiet generosity, and the way she always put others before herself. She lived a life of compassion, giving, and love, touching more lives than she likely ever realized.

In keeping with Carolyn’s wishes, those who knew her are encouraged to honour her memory through acts of kindness to anyone in need.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A private funeral service to honour and celebrate her life will be held in London, ON, where she will be laid to rest alongside her family.
