Obituary of James (Jim) Dingle Smith

The family is saddened to announce the passing of Jim Smith on May 14, 2026, following a brief illness.

Jim was born in Buchans, Newfoundland, the son of James Smith and Marie Head and one of 15 children.  He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) from Iona University in New York and a Master of Arts (Education) from the University of Alberta.

Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia (Pat), children Patrick James (Diane), Peter (JJ), Kelly-Anne (David) and Christy (Keven), and grandchildren Keenan, Marina, Justin, Jeremy, Grayson and Payton.

Prior to relocating to Ottawa, Jim worked in the field of education, in Newfoundland, for 25 years.  He then worked for the Federal Public Service, retiring from the Department of National Defence as the Director of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in 2003.  Jim was immensely proud of the positive changes he was able to make in many people’s lives through his work with EAP.

Jim was an avid volunteer, spending several years supporting children with disabilities as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Easter Seals Society. He was also active with the Knights of Columbus - St. Patrick’s - Fallowfield.

The family is grateful to the Intensive Care Unit at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital for the excellent care that was provided.

Donations in memory of Jim can be made to the Queensway-Carleton Hospital Foundation or to the Charity of your choice.
