Samuel Rosenberg

Obituary of Samuel Alexander Rosenberg

Passed away at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in his 80th year on March 1, 2026. Sam leaves behind his best friend and loved wife of nearly 49 years, Carolyn. He was a loving and caring father and will be keenly missed by his two sons, Daniel and Timothy, and by his only and cherished granddaughter Serena and her mother Nena. He was the adoring daddy of Nellie, his furry sidekick, with whom he spent many peaceful hours walking in the neighbourhood.

Sam arrived at Pier 21 at the age of seven, having spent his early childhood in Poland and Israel. In 1964, he entered the University of Toronto where he was to spend 13 years. He earned a B.Sc., MSc.  and a PhD in electrical engineering and spent the remainder of his time at UofT as a post doctoral researcher and lecturer. He joined B.N.R. in 1977 and stayed as it became Nortel, which eventually sold the Power division to Emerson.

He was also a part time professor at the University of Ottawa. A humanist, Sam was passionate about science and had an unwavering faith in its ability to make the world a better place.

A comedian manque, one of Sam’s fondest memories was an appearance at Yuk-Yuks in Toronto in 1975. An avid philatelist, he amassed a large stamp collection,  trading with people from all over the world . His favourite hobby after retirement was genealogy, an activity which suited his inquisitive and meticulous nature. He was a master of many crafts and spent hours renovating not only his home, but those of his children. A gentle man, he was happiest with quiet pursuits.

Sam was deeply touched by all the many offers in the neighourhood by those willing to help in whatever way they could to lighten his journey. To all those who offered assistance, and to all those who gave it, your generosity, kindness, and compassion is profoundly appreciated. You made a difference in his last year of life and your thoughtfulness will not be forgotten. A special thank you to Stephanie, Norma, Ferne and Kim and Long.

As per Sam’s request, no funeral service or celebration of life will be held.
