Carmel O'Reilly

Obituary of Carmel O'Reilly

Carmul (Carmel) June O'Reilly, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in Ottawa on January 1, 2026. Born on July 21, 1926, to Albert and Myrtle May Moyes (Barnaby), Carmel lived a life rich with love and purpose that spanned nearly a century.

Growing up in the city of Ottawa during the post-war years shaped Carmel into the remarkable woman she became. A graduate of the High School of Commerce in 1945, Carmel embarked on her professional journey equipped with skills that would serve her well throughout her career in both private and governmental administration. Her professional journey was marked by diligence and integrity; however, it was her role as a devoted mother to her seven daughters that brought her immeasurable joy.

After raising her family, Carmel pursued further education at Algonquin College where she earned a certificate in Business and Commerce Secretarial in 1978. This accomplishment reflected not just ambition but also resilience; qualities that defined much of Carmel's character throughout the years.

Carmel was known for her zest for life. She embraced an active lifestyle and met every moment with enthusiasm. In later years, she continued this passion through dance classes, singing and theatre performances—activities that allowed her spirit to shine brightly among friends old and new. Her passion extended beyond personal enjoyment as she actively participated in community organizations dedicated to enhancing social activities for seniors. She believed deeply in fostering connections among individuals who might otherwise feel isolated or alone—a mission driven by compassion that resonated throughout all aspects of her life.

Carmel is survived by her seven daughters—Christine, Donna, Colleen, Joann, Diane, Mary-Lynn, and Cynthia, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is preceded by two husbands: Donald Moher (1986) and Michael O’Reilly (2007).

As we remember Carmel O'Reilly today—the woman whose laughter could light up any room, whose humor that would keep you laughing, whose resilience, kindness and love that inspired and encouraged— may we honor her legacy through our own acts of kindness, love and generosity toward one another. A private interment will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 11:30 am followed by a reception from noon until three o'clock at Pinecrest Cemetery located at 2500 Baseline Road in Ottawa.
