Obituary of Joan Read

READ, Joan Elizabeth (Brown)

April 22, 1937 - January 4, 2026

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear mother, Joan Elizabeth Read on Sunday January 4th, 2026.

Beloved wife for over 63 years of the late Lorne Read (2021) and loved mother of David (Barri) and Bruce (Brigitte). A loving Nanne to Cameron (Mallory), Ashlynn (Jared), Christopher (Katrina), Chelsea and Caden, and a Great-Nanne to Cole, Blake and Ryan.

Joan grew up in Richmond to parents William David and Christina Brown along with her 2 sisters Helen (Leonard Fraser) and Barbara (Robert Vaughn), all pre-deceased. She is survived by sister in laws Jean Read and Joan (Art) and pre-deceased by Ken Read (Madeline), Lois Masse, Art Read, Joan Craig (Barrie).

Mom was especially happiest when in the company of family and always selflessly made sure everyone was looked after. She maintained a healthy social network through the many friendships made throughout her career and participation in the church. Her strong passion for gardening was ever evident to those familiar with her property, and she cultivated those gardens with pride.

Leaning on her upbringing on the dairy farm in Richmond, Joan went on to spend much of her working career with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Passionate about the 4-H program, she spent many years at fall fairs is Richmond, Carp and Metcalfe insuring the 4-H participants were helped and guided during various shows and competitions to realize the benefits of rural life she fondly remembered.

Visitation will be held Thursday January 8th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8, at Cole Funeral Services, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa. 

A service in memory Joan will take place at Christ Church Bells Corners, 3861 Old Richmond Rd, Nepean on January 9th, 2026 11:00 am, with a reception following afterwards.

Inturnment to take place in the spring at Pinecrest Cemetery.
