Obituary of Robert (Bob) Shephard

With profound sadness, his family announces Bob's passing, peacefully at home, as he wished, on December 5th, 2025 with family by his side.

Bob is survived by his loving family, his beloved wife of 58 years, Wendy, his devoted children, Allyson (Curtis) and Michael (Tara) and his four adored grandchildren, Jackson, Kat, Jake and Matthew. Also survived by his sister, Wendy (Bruce), sister-in-law, Lynda, and his niece and nephews who all loved him very much. Predeceased by his parents, Millie and Mel, his nephew Kail, and his close friends Roddy and Jimmy.

From humble beginnings in Eau Claire, near Mattawa, Bob was a self-made man who called Ottawa home for more than 50 years. He enjoyed many athletic endeavours - hockey, baseball, skiing and golf, among his favourites. Many happy hours were spent at the family cottages, in Calabogie which he loved best and at Poplar Point. Bob's family will hold many cherished memories of him at the cottages having fun on the water in his many boats, hitting the slopes and the links, setting off spectacular fireworks displays and having end of day bonfires.

Bob loved to travel, with many golf trips south with the boys, visiting Michael in Australia and family vacations to St. Pete's Beach and the Caribbean. With his outgoing nature, many a stranded motorist, lost tourist and stray dog benefited from his generous spirit and willingness to always help others. With his ready smile and easy laugh, Bob could find the fun in even the simplest moments. Road trips with him were always an adventure, with a quick (or not so quick detour) down back country roads to find some historical plaque or another. Bob had many loved pets throughout his life, but had a special bond with his last dogs, Max and Vader, with whom he spent many long hours on walks all over Ottawa.

Bob was most proud of and found great joy in his role as Poppa. Whether it be cheering from the boards or the side lines at hockey and lacrosse games, enjoying jazz trumpet performances or admiring works of art, Bob supported his grandchildren in everything they did. They are his greatest legacy.

Special thanks to close friend Brian for the double doubles and the weekly games of crib.

Final arrangements are in the care of Cole Funeral Services (colefuneralservices.com). In accordance with Bob's wishes, there will be no funeral or wake. A private family interment will take place in the spring. A gathering to remember Bob will be held after Christmas with family and close friends. Donations in his memory may be made to the Ottawa Humane Society (https://www.ottawahumane.ca/donate-fundraise).

Bob's memory will live on through the lives he touched and the love he shared with all those who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Bob, knowing that your love and light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who love you.
