Dr. Angel Gomez

Obituary of Dr. Angel Gomez

In loving memory of Ángel Leonel Gómez, 87, who left this world peacefully on the night of 2 December, 2025. His memory will live on in those who loved him.

Ángel was born in Jagüey Grande, Cuba, to Alberto Gómez and Zoila Hernández on 1 March, 1938. He attended La Progresiva school. He went on to become one of the first Cuban students to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Czechoslovakia at Palacký University Olomouc.

He emigrated to Canada as a refugee in a daring escape from Czechoslovakia at Gander International Airport in Newfoundland on 11 February, 1971. He lived and worked in various communities across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan before settling in the Ottawa area in 1980. He served as a family physician in the community of Aylmer, where he ran a doctor’s office for 15 years until 1995.

He loved music – especially Cuban music – and was an accomplished bongo drummer, and he often played in his spare time.

He is survived by his spouse, Eva, and his three sons, Boris, Victor and Martin, their partners, Magdalena and Emily, as well as five grand

children, Anna-Karolina, Isabella, Elena, Julia and Sofia.

The family will be holding a private service to grieve and honour his life.

"Yo soy un hombre sincero.

De donde crece la palma."
