It’s hard to believe that I’ve known Velma for 27 years. I had taken an early retirement from DSS Pay Office and was looking for a term position. She hired me over the phone to work on her team at NHW in personnel. As a team leader she was conscientious, fair, demanding, inspiring and extremely knowledgable. She was highly respected by Management and her staff. We worked many evenings and weekends to meet pay deadlines. I remember when there was a power outage in Ontario and down the Eastern coast of the States. Everyone in the building was evacuated. As soon as Velma learned how serious a situation it was, she convinced some security guards to escort us up to our offices to get calculators and all the equipment we would need. She packed us into her van and took us to her house. The power was on in the Gatineau! We worked on her porch making calculations and inputting data from time sheets to pay the students and nurses. Such quick original thinking! As friends we spent many hours together making a formal bridesmaid’s dress for her daughter, costumes for choir concerts and formatting and typing Dan’s thesis for his MA from an American online college. Dan, Velma and I travelled to Florida, Dominican Republic, The Keys and New Brunswick. When I became single, they looked after my safety and well being. My condolences to all her family. She was a truly wonderful person, and I loved her deeply. She will be missed by all. “Grief is the price we pay for love” Wendy Heenan

I want ALL Family, to know, my arms surround you in this sad time. Deep condolences. Today, Wednesday, Sept. 24th, I was sitting in my usual spot, in living room, and a female Blue Jay, landed, on the rung of my patio, staring me in the eyes. I immediately was so happy, as I thought it was Velma, coming to say, all was OK. She stayed for about a minute, and departed. I am having a difficult time, up to now, with Velma's leaving, but as most people, that knew Velma, said, everyone should have a little of Velma in them. I love you friend, and will look forward to our meeting up again. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Written by Trish Tombstone. Gina Pineault.

To Shannon,Kristen, Cory and all of Velma's family and friends, I offer my deepest condolences for the loss of your mother, grand-mother, sister, aunt, close friend, Velma. She was known to us in the choir of le "Choeur classique de l'Outaouais" as, the solid, no-nonsense soprano who looked as solid as a rock, even through all the very difficult events that she had gone throughexperienced over the last couple of years. My deepest thoughts frequently went to you, Shannon, Kristen and Cory for living through all those tragic events of the last two years. Velma frequently shared with us how much she appreciated the support of her daughter and family when they invited her to stay with them as long as needed and made accommodations to their house for her while she had lost her house through the fire. I will be out of the country when you celebrate Velma's life so I will not have the privilege of meeting those"solid kids of the solid mother". Sandra (Legault)

I met Velma while singing together in La Chanterelle choir. Most recently this past July, Velma and I shared some time together singing with Au choeur de l'Outaouais where she shared some of her current life's story. She was recovering from surgery but wanted to sing. And sing she did! There is now a "singing angel" watching over her loved ones. Adieu Velma. Cheryl Cameron
