Dear Joan Anne, Angus, Michael & Maggie, Mafanway and I remember Jim very fondly. He was always just so kind, witty and funny, not unlike his sons I might observe! That fruit did not fall very far from the tree. He will be missed mightily. I will never forget an embarrassing story that arose during a visit we paid him at his home in Atlanta one year together with Angus and Laura. And since it was very embarrassing (so I am not repeating here) to me, he never forgot it or the humour of it either. We shared it often in the years of friendship that followed and laughed often. God bless you Jim and all of your family in this time of loss.

Dear Joan Anne, Michael, Angus and Maggie. June and I were both very saddened to hear that Jim is no longer with us and extend our most sincere condolences. Jim was a very special person in our lives starting in Chicago and continuing until the last time we drove together to the New Edinburgh for a TCS evening in June. While he started as a living legend who was my boss, he quickly became a wonderful friend. I owe him a lot for the encouragement, support and thoughtful advice he provided throughout my career. When Jim came into my Mom’s life, everything changed. While my Mom was reluctant to start a new relationship, Jim’s warmth and charm quickly won her over. Their shared love of music, curiosity, and appreciation of people and places sparked a romance and deep companionship that endured for over 25 years. While both Jim and Joan Anne had cherished their previous partners, they found in each other another opportunity to create a new life together- one filled with travel, good friends, family time, and days filled with laughter. There was always laughter when Jim was around. His anecdotes and stories enriched every gathering, and there was invariably a twinkle in his eye as he prepared to share a particular yarn. He liked a bit of mischief, was a great sport, and managed to find the perfect outfit for every occasion. Whether it was a tropical shirt, an elegant fedora, a finely cut suit, or the perfect rap gear, he was always well put together and always a gentleman. Jim’s extensive international experience brought a new dimension into my Mom’s life. Lunches with Jim’s old friends and colleagues opened up a new world to Mom and she jumped in with both feet, curious, open and always enthusiastic. Jim’s laughter will stay with me always. He had the heartiest of laughs, full of joy and gusto. He encouraged that joyful exuberance in my Mom during their regular trips to Harbor Island, or as they travelled around the world to visit new places and old friends. They were true sweethearts, loving partners, and steadfast friends. One of my favourite memories was seeing Jim and Mom together at Handel’s Messiah one Christmas. We had driven through a heavy snowstorm to get to the National Arts Centre and, as the opening notes of the concert began, Jim and Mom looked at each other, their faces alight with anticipation and excitement. Their light, energy and love for one another shone through whenever they were together. We’re so thankful to have had Jim as part of our lives; we’ll remember him with joy and gratitude always. As a Trade Commissioner a generation or more younger, I had heard of a legendary Jim Elliott over the years. But I'd never crossed paths with the guy so after a time I thought he might be a fictitious composite character. My image of him was as a rascally Trade guy who could be neither led nor driven, an independent fun action figure who got things done, kinda like some of us only dreamed of being. Imagine my stunned surprise when at one of John Lang's olde farts beers-on-Beechwood sessions...there he was! About a year or two ago Jim and I were the last men standing at one of these sessions - actually sitting slouched - and we actually got to have a conversation. I started by saying something lame like "so, how are you Jim?", to which he replied "do you really want to know?", to which I said something like "oh ya sure". That started an hour-long + several-pints discussion with Jim who started at #10, stepping methodically down to #1, listing his litany of ailments. We laughed our arses off. And that's how I want to remember what turned out to be a real TC and real, great guy. MRV

My wife, Barbara Campbell (formerly with Trade Commissioner Service HQ), and I offer our sincere condolences to those who grieve Jim's passing following a full and remarkable life. Few people have had the ability to leave such a memorable personal mark as Jim did. To his Trade Commisioner colleagues like me, Jim was notable and special -- possessed of a quick mind, tension-cutting quips and humour, and salt-of-the-earth perspectives.
